Elkader Register, Thur., 20 July 1899. From the Guttenberg Press, undated.
Last Thursday night Coroner Scholz was called to N. Buena Vista to hold an inquest over the remains of George Atchinson who was killed at that place Thursday morning. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Atchinson and had been to Minnesota looking for work and not finding any, was on his way home and got off the train either at this place or Turkey River and intended to walk from there home. He probably was tired and sat down on the track to rest. Where he was killed there is a sharp curve and the train cannot be heard coming only a short distance. He was struck on the head and his skull crushed and it is supposed that he died shortly after. The last heard from him was in Minneapolis and his folks still thought he was there. It was a sad blow to them to find out he was dead and killed so near home. Coroner Scholz impaneled a jury consisting of Robert Meuth, Rudolph Meuth and E. P. Sawyer, who rendered the verdict that Geo. Atchinson was killed by being struck by a Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul train. The remains were buried Friday.- Guttenberg Press.
