Elkader Register, Thur., 13 July 1899. From the Guttenberg Press, undated.

On Thursday, July 6, 1899, after a lingering illness of seven months of consumption, occurred the death of John L. Casutt, of this place. He was born in Switzerland...Fellers, Canton Gruenfelder, Switzerland, December 1, 1853, and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Casutt. He came to America with his parents in 18_0 (looks like 1860) and came direct to Guttenberg where his parents resided for a time and then moved on a farm near Elkader, here he grew to manhood. He started in business in Elkader and conducted his business until 1887, when he came to Guttenberg, where he continued in business for several years, but for several years has been living a retired life. He was married on December 28, 1875, to Miss Emma Kossuth of this city. He leaves a wife, four sons and two daughters to mourn his death. He also leaves an aged mother and three brothers.

His wife was his constant companion during his entire illness and she with her children were at the bedside when he passed away. Mr. Casutt enjoyed a wide acquaintance and was held high by all who knew him. The funeral took place Sunday afternoon and was conducted by the M.W.A. camp of which he was a member, and Rev. Brinkman conducting a short service at St. Mary's church after which the M.W.A. assisted by a large number of visiting brethern escorted the remains to the City cemetery where the funeral ceremonies of the M.W.A. were conducted and the remains were consigned to their last resting place. A large number of out of town people attended the funeral to pay their last respects to a departed friend. This entire community as well as his friends all over the county will extend their sympathy to the afflicted family in the loss of a kind father and indulgent husband. May he rest in peace.- Guttenberg Press.
