--- --- ---

Elkader Register, Thur., 13 July 1899.

Mrs. Adam Henkes, nee Christina Yearous, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fredrick Yearous, was born in Loudonville, Knox County, Ohio, April 26, 1843. She was the youngest daughter of a family of thirteen children, three of whom survive her, Charles Yearous of Highland, Clayton County, Iowa, Jacob Yearous of Eagle Grove, Iowa, and Mrs. George Baldner of Loudonville Ohio. In 1865 the family came to Iowa and settled on a farm near Farmersburg. The deceased was united in marriage with Adam Henkes Jan. 1_th, 1867. As a result of this union nine children have been born to them, William, Hattie, (Mrs. A. A. Kishman, of Brownh_lm, Ohio), Elias, Sophia, David, Celia, Raymond, Benjamin and Cyrus, three having preceded her, Elias, Sophia and Raymond. Mrs. Henkes has for a number of years suffered from a complication of diseases to which she succumbed July 1st, 1899, making her age 53 years, 2 months and 5 days. She was a kind Christian, loving, sacrificing wife and mother, ever breathing into the hearts of her family the sweetness of her life. With her we have lost a refuge when trials beset us, yet the rustle of a wing will ever take the place of the voice of sweet council. Her pain has ceased, for we know that death is kinder to the dead than life is to the living.
