Chas. W. Schultz, for many years a prominent citizen of Read twp., died Wednesday June 14th. He was born in Prussia Jan. 15th, 1826, and was the recipient of an excellent education, and studied medicine which he practiced to some extent. He came to Clayton county in 1855, one year after coming to the United States. Up to about 1890 he followed the mercantile business at Read and was postmaster for many years. He was candidate for county treasurer at one time and came within a few votes of election. One daughter in Germany survives him, also two step-daughters, Mrs. William Werger of Farmersburg, Mrs. I. Poesch of Omaha, and a step-son, Wm. Best of Read, survive him. The funeral was held last Friday being conducted by Rev. Sommerlad, of Garnavillo, Father Seifert not being able to serve.
