Elkader Register, Thur., 23 Mar. 1899. Edgewood column.
At her home near Edgewood, Iowa, Sunday morning, March 19, 1899, occurred the death of Mrs. Thomas Fisher.
Margaret Jones was born in Union county, Ohio, Oct. 21, 1847. She was united by marriage to Thos. Fisher, Nov. 11, 1866, at Elkader, Iowa. A short time after their marriage they removed on their farm near Edgewood, where they remained thirty-three years.
It is not often that a community is thrown into such a state of sadness as was this neighborhood last Sunday morning when it became known that Mrs. Fisher had passed beyond these earthly portals between the rising and setting sun. Although her death had been expected for some time it was a shock to her many friends to know that the change had really come. Mrs. Fisher was a great sufferer for the last few months. She was very patient and when any act of kindness was done for her showed that she was grateful by words and smiles. The remains were prepared for burial and laid out in the home where there were many beautiful floral offerings.
The funeral services were held at the house Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock the discourse being delivered by Rev. L. Hubbel of this place, who spoke words of sympathy to the bereaved family. The pall bearers were Louis Zahrndt, Chas. Hesner, Mart Weyant and Will Purdy.
Although the kind heart is stilled and the loved form gone from family and social circle, she will be forever held in fond remembrance by her many friends and by the W.R.C. of which she was an honored member. They marched in a body and performed their last ceremonies at the house and grave. She leaves besides a heart-broken husband, five children, four sons and one daughter, and one brother, Louis Jones of McGregor. All the children were present but one son, Vernon, who is with the 49th Iowa Vol., at Cuba.
This verse was composed by the deceased a short time before her death:
"Earthly friends, adieu, adieu,
Earthly friends, farewell to you.
Softly breathe your last good-bye,
Angels call me, let me die.
Precious loved ones, weep no more,
Meet me on the other shore."
