Mrs. Mary Ann Harris was born in Greene county, Pennsylvania, September 24th, 1842. Died at her home in Mallory township, Clayton county, Iowa, March 20, 1899, at the age of 56 years, 5 mo. and 26 days.
The subject of this sketch was married to Stephen C. Harris in 1859. They came to Iowa in 1871. Here they lived a quiet happy life, until the death of her husband, which occurred Feb. 5th, 1891. Always enjoying themselves best when they could lighten the cares and bring sunshine and happiness into the lives of others. She united with the United Brethern church in which faith she lived a true Christian life for over 30 years. She was much beloved and highly respected by all who knew her.
She had been suffering for a number of years from that dreaded disease, heart trouble, but not confined to her bed, and at the time of her death was sitting in her chair, and started for the bed, her youngest daughter, age fifteen years being alone with her. Her last words were "Oh, Etta, help me quick", just as she uttered these words she fell. Her daughter thinking she was dead ran and screamed for help.
Five daughters and two sons are left to mourn the loss of their mother: Mrs. Anna J. Smith of Kinbrae, Minnesota; Mrs. Maggie Tinkey of Osterdock; Wm. C. Harris of Colesburg; and Ella, Emma, Etta and Thomas who are unmarried. Etta and Emma resided at Greeley at the time of her death.
The funeral was held March 22, 1899, at Bethel church, conducted by Rev. Hansel. The text being from 2d Timothy, 4:6, 7 and 8th verses, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Bethel cemetery, to wait the resurrection.
