Elkader Register, Thur., 16 Mar. 1899. Elkport and Vicinity column.
Last Friday our community was shocked by the news that Frank Flaherty was dead. Frank was the second son of Peter and Mary Flaherty and was born in East Elkport, August 5th, 18__. He died at Mercy Hospital Dubuque, Iowa, March 10th, 1899, making him 20 years and 7 months old at the time of his death. About two months ago Frank was taken sick and began failing in health. Dr. Kriebs was called who after making thorough examination made a very discouraging report to his parents and advised them to send him to a hospital at once. Mr. Flaherty acted promptly and sent Frank to Mercy Hospital at Dubuque for treatment, everything that money and friends could do was of no avail and he died of quick consumption om March 10th, 1899. His remains were brought home for burial Saturday morning and the funeral took place Monday. A large concourse of friends attended the funeral to show their love and respect for the kind and winsome boy that was born and raised amongst them and who was known for his many kind acts. His death is indeed a severe loss and hard blow to his parents and the many friends join with us in extending our sympathy to them in this sad hour of their bereavement.
