Elkader Register, Thur., 09 Feb. 1899. From the Guttenberg Press, undated.
On Sunday morning the news was circulated about the city that Henry Stevens had passed to the great beyond, and it was with regret that our citizens heard the news. Henry Stevens was born Feb. 6, 1816, in the town of With_age, province of Hanover, Germany, and came to America at the age of 16 years, landing at New York. He went from there to Buffalo, N.Y., and from there went to Cincinnati, O., where he worked at his trade, a stone mason. He was married in Cincinnati to Miss Elizabeth Gausefohl, Sept. 18, 1836, and remained there for twenty years and then removed to Clayton county where (he) remained until his death. In 1886 he and his wife celebrated their golden wedding. His wife died July 29, 1887, and for a number of years he has lived with his daughters in this city. Henry Stevens died Sunday morning of old age, being 83 years, 2 days of age at the time of his death. He was a private in Capt. Baker's Co. E, 9th Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He enlisted Sept. 9, 1861, and was discharged Aug. 15, 1862, on account of disability from a gunshot wound in the left arm. Henry Stevens was the father of ten children, six of whom are living. They are: Mrs. Saffelder, of Omaha, Neb.; Mrs. H. Eppens, of this city; Mrs. C. E. Grotewohl, of Elkader; Mrs. Geo. Guss and Mrs. John Fricke, of this city, and Wm. Stevens, of Colorado. He leaves beside the above mentioned 29 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren to mourn his death. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, Rev. Bushnell conducting the services, with interment in the City cemetery. He leaves a large circle of friends to mourn his death. His race on earth is ended, and may his eternal sleep be peaceful.- Guttenberg Press.
