Elkader Register, 19 Jan. 1899.
Mrs. Patrick Fitzpatrick.
At the home of her daughter, Mrs. Michael Wiley, near Littleport, on the 14th inst. occurred the death of Katharine, wife of Patrick Fitzpatrick, at the age of 76 years.
The deceased was born in the county of Cork, Ireland, and emigrated to this country at an early age, making her home with relatives in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she was united in marriage to her surviving husband. After a few years residence in Cincinnati she came with her husband to Clayton county, Iowa, in 1855, and settled on a farm in Cox Creek township, where she continued to reside until the 24th of last month, when her home was destroyed by fire, which necessitated her removal to the home of her daughter. She leaves surviving, her husband, five children, four sons and one daughter. Matthew, the oldest son, resides here and is engaged in the abstract business, and Mary, her daughter resides near Littleport and was almost constant companion of deceased during her last sickness.
The deceased had many excellent traits of character, always frank and sincere. She had a strong will and held with remarkable tenacity whatever she believed to be right. She loved the old homestead and could not be persuaded to leave it, not until forced by the fiery element would she bid the old home good-bye. It may well be said that a good woman has left this world, for, it is to be hoped, a brighter and better world beyond.
Her remains were brought here Monday followed by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends of deceased, and after appropriate ceremonies at St. Joseph's church, Rev. Father Reilly officiating, were interred in St. Joseph's cemetery. May she rest in peace.
