Elkader Register, 12 Jan. 1899.
I desire in this public manner to thank the members of the Elkader Post, G.A.R. and to say that I am proud of their patriotic action last Saturday in refusing to permit the burial of a comrade, a stranger to all of us, in the potter's field on the county poor farm, but instead, purchased a lot in the Elkader cemetery and on Sunday buried the patriot with the honors of war. The dead comrade was Herman Rulifson, Co. F., 153 N.Y. Inf. Vol., sent from the south part of the county to the state soldiers home and returned to this county as incurably insane. He has fought his last battle and now sleeps in the soldiers grave of honor, where his grave can be garlanded with flowers with each recurring Decoration Day of our dead heroes.
F. D. Bayless, Commander Post
