The funeral services for Joseph C. Balluff was held at the Congregational church, Thursday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Rev. T. J. Elwick, pastor of the M.E. church. Mesdames F. H. Slagle and B. W. Talcott sang "Abide With Me" and "No Night There" accompanied by Mrs. J. S. Knight at the organ. Interment took place in local cemetery. The casket supporters were A. J. Stamp, B. W. Talcott, E. E. Bartlett, Ernest Roberts, Bert Heddleson and G. F. Scofield. During the services the business houses were closed. Joseph C. Balluff, son of Mary Jane and John P. Balluff, was born on a farm near Strawberry Point, May 18, 1870. At ten years of age his father, a Civil War Veteran, died, and seven years later his mother passed away. For seventeen years he made his home with his half-sister, Mrs. Eliza Dockwell Gifford. Dec. 24, 1902, he was married to Miss Eva Stone. To this union were born two children. After his marriage he lived on the Barr, Jessen and Stone farms until Jan. 1, 1914. They then moved to town and purchased a home on Elkader street. For a number of years he was employed with the Bales and Rhodies Construction Co. but recently in Township road work. On the evening of Dec. 9, 1929, when Mr. Balluff was returning from Elkader in a car driven by L. C. Emerson, an accident occurred at Tinker's hill resulting in his instant death. He was honest, steady and industrious, a kind and loving father and husband, a man of few words who never spoke ill of his neighbor. Besides his sorrowing wife he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. H. B. (Mildred) Grove; one son, Burton, one granddaughter, Luella Mae Grove, whom he was greatly attached to, and two sisters, Mrs. J. B. (Nellie) Stamp and Mrs. J. C. (Emma) Duerst, both of this place. Joe has gone from us but let us keep his teachings in mind and live by them.
