Clayton County Register, Thur., 25 July 1929. Wood column.
George W. Smock, better known to his friends as "Wash", died at his home near the head of Elk Creek, Friday evening. He had been in very poor health for several months and death came as a welcome relief to his suffering. He leaves to mourn his death nine children and fourteen grandchildren. The children are as follows: Ernest Smock, Mrs. Philip Ingles, Mrs. H. Hann, Mrs. Ross Morley, and Bert, Cecil, Claude, Ray and Bernice, at home. One son, Lawrence, died in infancy. His wife preceded him in death about ten years ago. Mr. Smock was a very kind and helpful friend and neighbor and will be sadly missed. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at the Elk valley schoolhouse where a large crowd of friends and relatives gathered to pay their last tribute to the departed one. A. H. Meyer of the Wood M.E. church preached the funeral sermon.
