Clayton County Register, Thur., 11 July 1929. Strawberry Point column.

The funeral services of Mrs. Andrew B. Hughes were held at the Lutheran church Wednesday afternoon, conducted by her pastor, Rev. M. O, Jahr. Interment was in our beautiful cemetery. The pall bearers were six cousins of the deceased, Earl Opperman and Albert Opperman of this place, Frank Allenstein, Carl Allenstein, Walter Allenstein and Ralph Allenstein, of Lamont. Mrs. Clara ____ Hughes, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest J. Opperman, was born Feb. 22, 1898, in M_____ township, Buchanan county, Iowa. She was baptized and received into the Lutheran church by Rev. Graf, at that time pastor of the church. after attending instructions she was confirmed by the same pastor April 9, 1911. She was one of the graduates of the class of 1915 of the Strawberry Point High School and the class of 1919 of Upper Iowa University, Fayette. For three years she taught school, first at Greene, Iowa, and later at Lamont. On June 23, 1921, she was married to Andrew B. Hughes by Rev. G. Fritschel. Three children blessed this union, James Andrew, William George, and Kathryn Jane. About a year ago the deceased had a very severe attack of the flu, which left her in a weak condition and finally resulted in a complete breakdown, from which she did not recover. For thirteen weeks she was in bed, being with her parents during this time. Although she received the best possible care, it was only a matter of time until her death. On Monday, July 1, 1929, death brought her sufferings to an end at the age of 31 years, 4 months and 10 days. She is survived by her husband and three children, her parents, two sisters, Mrs. Edna Hagge and Mrs. Leta Gipper, and one brother, Ernest Jr., besides other relatives and a large circle of friends.
