DEATH OF FORMER VOLGA CITY RESIDENT
------
JOHN COPELAND DIED AT MISSOULA, MONTANA, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 9TH
------
The following obituary of John Copeland, a former Volga City resident, is taken from the Bozeman, Montana, Daily Chronicle.Funeral Services for John Copeland of Manhattan, Montana, who died Monday morning at the Northern Pacific hospital in Missoula, were held at West Chapel Wednesday afternoon, with the Rev. F. C. Phelps of Deer Lodge, Montana, who was for five years pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, officiating. A large number of friends of the deceased and his family came from Manhattan for the funeral, including many members of the Manhattan Masonic Lodge, who attended the service in a body accompanied the family with the remains to the Bozeman Masonic burial service. The singers were also from Manhattan, Mrs. Everett Beck, Mrs. Harry White, C. L. Gayle and Ed De Boer, with Mrs. E. M. Wright accompanist. The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful. The pall bearers were H. H. Benepe, R. G. McPherson, Leonard Moritz, Richard Eddy, Roy Sowles and D. F. Mains
The Rev. Phelps read a sketch of the life of Mr. Copeland, and spoke highly of his character as he know him intimately during the time he was pastor of the Manhattan church and Mr. Copeland was a member of the church. He spoke of the passing of Mr. Copeland in a quiet way, saving "he had lived so close to his Master that passing from life to death, for him, was just one more step with his Maker."
John Copeland was born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, December 21, 1858, the third child in a family of five children born to Edward and Margaret Copeland. The family moved to a farm near Volga, Iowa, where Mr. Copeland grew to manhood. On May 4, 1885, he was married to Mattie Marble. Into their home were born five children, and in 1905 they adopted Leon Richard. Of these six children, one daughter survives. A few years after his marriage, Mr. Copeland united with the Presbyterian church. He affiliated with the Masonic Lodge at Anamosa, Iowa, and with the Modern Woodmen, and was a member in good standing in both organizations at the time of his death.
In 1917, the family moved to Montana, spending one year in White Sulphur Springs and then moving to Manhattan, where they continued to make their home, and Mr. Copeland was manager of the Copeland Lumber yard at Logan, near his home. Mr. Copeland took seriously ill, August 24, 1925. On September 29, he entered the Northern Pacific Hospital where he died November 9th, from muscular heart trouble.
Mr. Copeland is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mattie Copeland, by his daughter, Miss Neva Copeland a teacher in the high school at Missoula, by one sister Mrs. Minnie White of Portland, Oregon, who spent several weeks with him during his last illness, and by a number of other relatives including a nephew, Lee A. Copeland and his wife of Bozeman, who were often with him during his illness, and whom he loved dearly. Mrs. Copeland and daughter accompanied the remains to Bozeman, and will spend a few days at the L. A. Copeland home and in Manhattan, before returning to Missoula to make their home.
