Elkader Register, Thur., 10 Dec. 1925. Guttenberg column.

Mrs. Charles W. Scholz (nee Susanna Helena Ulrich), one of this community's most worthy mothers, and highly esteemed pioneer residents, peacefully passed away at her home in Guttenberg on Monday morning, after a few days illness, and at the age of 78 years, 1 month and 4 days. Deceased was born in Sonnerbent, near Hammel, Silesia, Germany, on November 3, 1847, immigrating to the United States with her parents in the year 1869 and settling at Milwaukee, Wis., where she was united in marriage with Mr. Charles W. Scholz in the year 1869. After her marriage she came to Guttenberg, Iowa, with her husband to reside, where she has spent the remainder of her life, and where her husband was successfully engaged in the mercantile business for a number of years. Her husband preceded her in death on April 13, 1895. Three sons, Earnest, Henry and Otto, also preceded the mother in death. Mrs. Scholz was a true Christian woman in every respect, and her greatest pleasure in life at all times was to do acts of kindness for her family and friends. She was a kind and loving mother and friend, and her memories will be forever cherished by all. On last Friday morning she suffered a stroke of paralysis. Being alone in her home when the stroke came upon her, she fell to the floor and also had the misfortune to break her hip. Shortly afterwards being found by relatives in a serious condition. During her short illness all that loving hands could do and medical knowledge could suggest was done to save her life, but all failed when the Angel of Death called her to the other and better world, where there is no more suffering, but joy and happiness forever. Her death is deeply mourned by six sons: Herman of Dubuque; Charles W. and Robert H. of Guttenberg; William of Ossian; George J. of Alta Vista; and Fred H. of Lake Wales, Florida; two daughters, Mrs. Pauline Aulwes of Guttenberg, and Mrs. Anna Deuce of Chicago, Ill. Sixteen grandchildren, one brother, F. William Ulrich of Rock Falls, Ill., and numerous other relatives and friends, by whom she will be sadly missed. Funeral services were held at her late residence in this city on Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Emil Lehne of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church officiating. The body was laid to rest in the City cemetery. The funeral was largely attended by relatives and friends from far and near, which showed that deceased was held in high esteem by all who knew her.
