Elkader Register, Thur., 22 Oct. 1925. Strawberry Point column.
Herbert Allen, son of Jeffery M. and Laura Ann Allen, was born near Strawberry Point, April 27, 1870, and died Sunday morning, October 18, 1925, aged 55 years, 5 months and 21 days. He attended the local public school, where he received his education. A few years later he became interested in the blacksmith and wagon making business with his father in which he continued until he had to quit about a year ago when his health became so impaired that it was necessary for him to discontinue his work. Most of his life was spent in and around Strawberry Point except a short time spent in Oregon with his parents and a year in Elkader working at his trade. On March 12, 1900, he was united in marriage to Miss Bertha Hines. To this union was born one daughter, who died in infancy. He leaves to mourn his death his heart broken wife, one brother, Francis M. of Davenport, and two cousins, Wm. Jewett of Strawberry Point and Elmer Jewett of Independence, besides a host of relatives and friends. One brother, also his father and mother, preceded him in death.
"Herbert" as everybody knew him was a kind hearted man and a loving husband, always observing the best in others. During his lingering illness he always looked at the bright side speaking many times of the kindness of his wife, who patiently cared for him. At an early age he united with the M.W.A., R.N.A., Rebekahs and I.O.O.F. and always took an active part in the interest of these societies. Funeral services occurred at the M.E. church, Tuesday afternoon, conducted by an old friend Rev. W. A. Piper, of Bradgate, assisted by the local pastor, Rev. G. W. Turner.
