Elkader Register, Thur., 15 Oct. 1925.

Gottlieb Wertley, a resident of Elkader for many years, passed away at the hospital in Independence, Iowa, on Wednesday, October 7th, 1925, at 8:30 o'clock in the evening. The same night the body was taken home by relatives for burial.

Gottlieb Wertley, son of John and Mary Magdalein Wertley, was born in Wuertenberg, Germany, April 11, 1850. When three years of age he came with his parents to America. For six years the family lived in the State of Pennsylvania, after which they moved westward and made their home in Belle Plaine, Iowa. Here Mr. Wertley spent the next fourteen years of his life, then coming to Clayton County, Iowa, where he was united in marriage to Miss Julia Stemmer on September 23rd, 1873. Two children were born to this union, of which a son, John, preceded his father in death on February 13th, 1913, at the age of 37 years.

For a number of years Mr. Wertley was an invalid suffering more or less intensely from a rupture and hardening of the arteries, causing weakness and a disturbance of the entire nerve system. Nothing was left undone to give comfort and relief to the suffering husband and father by his faithful wife and those nearest to him. Although a trying task at times, understood only by the few that were familiar with the condition of the patient, loved ones would patiently and ceaselessly perform love's duty, until it was advisable that it would be best for all concerned to take the patient to the hospital for further care and treatment. The home folks, calling at the institution every now and then, could not help but notice, that he was gradually failing. As the family was not informed of late of any change in his condition, which would cause alarm, the end must have come unexpectedly. The time of his earthly pilgrimage was 73 years, 5 months and 26 days.

The departed is survived by his faithful wife, one daughter, Mrs. John Bahr, one grandson, Harry Bahr; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Mall of Clay Center, Kansas, and Mrs. Friederika Burkhardt of Des Moines, Iowa, other relatives and many friends and neighbors of years gone by.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Franke, were held Saturday afternoon, October 10th, at 1:30 o'clock at the late home and at 2:00 o'clock in the Evangelical church. Burial was made in the East Side cemetery.
