Elkader Register, Thur., 08 Oct. 1925.

Frederich Wilhelm Diers died Saturday, October 3, 1925, on the old home farm in Read Township at the age of 77 years, seven months and 23 days, death being traced directly to the infirmities of old age, although he had been ill for the past four weeks.

The deceased was born February 10, 1848, at Neuenberg, Duchy of Oldenberg, Germany, the son of John Henry and Margarethe Diers. When a lad of nine he came together with his parents and only brother and an adopted sister, to America and in October of the same year, 1857, settled on a farm in Read township. Ten years later he moved onto the old Diers farm, on which he has lived for the past 58 years and with the aid of his son, H. H. Diers, has built up one of the finest farms in north eastern Iowa. At the time Mr. Diers came to this country educational facilities were limited and what education he received he acquired through his own efforts.

December 13, 1872, Mr. Diers was united in marriage with Margarethe Schnieder and to this union six children were born, two of them dying in infancy. Those who survive the passing of a loving father are H. H. Diers on the old homestead; Mrs. W. A. Miller of Elkader; Mrs. J. L. Hagensick of Read township; and Miss Alma Diers at home. Mr. Diers only brother, Herman, of Steward, Nebraska, preceded him in death December 25, 1924, but his adopted sister, Mrs. August Wedemeyer of Nashua, Iowa, survives. He was also preceded in death by his wife in February, 1917.

For 48 years Mr. Diers, together with his son and the latter's sons, has been a breeder of blooded Shorthorn cattle and Poland China and Duroc Jersey hogs, and has been recognized as one of the pioneers in the purebred stock business. In fact Mr. Diers was the first stock-grower to bring a registered purebred Poland China hog into the county. He has held various offices in the township and with Insurance Companies, and through all of these years he has held the esteem of his neighbors and friends.

The deceased was an active member of the Zions Lutheran church at Clayton Center, from which place the funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Wuestenberg, the pastor, officiating. Interment was made in the Clayton Center cemetery at the side of his wife and where his father and grandfather are also buried.

One by one the early settlers and pioneers of this county are called home, but the work they have done for the following generations has been well and faithfully done and the advance to the present day conditions is but the result of their unselfish efforts. Clayton County is better off today because Mr. Diers has been one of its residents and the farmers in general, not only in Clayton county but in Iowa as a whole, will long remember the activities of F. W. Diers in the purebred stock-growing business.
