Elkader Register, Thur., 20 Aug. 1925.
The pioneers or first settlers of Clayton county are fast leaving us. Time rushes on and each must take his turn, he must answer when he is called. This time comes to every one when the work that God had given is finished. Some days are comparatively long, some short. "The old must die and the young may die."
Reier C. Larson of Highland was blessed with a long day of service. He reached the age of 88 years, 3 months and 15 days. Proverbs 10:27 "The fear of Jehovah prolongeth days" - His service to society was not rendered so much in a public way, but quietly at home. Questions to the family brought out the truth that he oftened gathered his family about him and taught them from scripture, the truths that spring up to eternal life. This he continued throughout his long association with his family, until his death Aug. 12, 1925.
There are not many who are given the privilege of celebrating a golden wedding, which blessing has been given to Mr. and Mrs. Reier Larson; they were married April 5th, 1861, 64 years ago, making their Golden wedding year 1911.
Together with a faithful life of quiet service in his home, in the above mentioned, as well as in the necessary foundation work of improving the farm and farm home, he has had the privilege of being with the establishing of two churches: the Marion and the Highland N.L. churches. These stand on high places with high spires pointing to the high and holy God.
According to the Word of God the blessings of the fathers are visited upon the children of them that love Him and keep His commandments, so with this promise in mind the surviving three sons, three daughters and 31 grandchildren are thankful to God for what the departed father has been for and to them all.
The 3 sons and 3 daughters are: Mrs. E. E. Gunderson. Albert Larson and Henry Larson of Elkader; Mrs. S. K. Odegaard of Flandreau, South Dakota; Mrs. B. O. Paulsen and Christ Larson of New Richland, Minn. Besides these and their 31 grandchildren are two brothers and one sister: Sam Larson and Gust Larson of Cambridge, Wisc. and Mrs. Hans Danilson of Rugby, N. Dakota. Nearly all of these were at the funeral.
From now until the next meeting, which is beyond the vale, Reier Larson, who was born in Eggedal, Norway, April 26, 1837, came to America in 1844, to Clayton county in 1866 will be thought of as having lived, given and passed on to the greater life.
The funeral was conducted by Rev. T. W. Tysdal of St. Olaf in the absence of the local pastor, Rev. G. Gunsten of Clermont.
