James Phillip Boland, one of the early pioneers of this community, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Thos. H. Donlon, last Thursday morning, at the age of 79 years, 1 month and 21 days. Mr. Boland had been in failing health for the past several years.
Mr. Boland was born in Ennis County Clare, Ireland, on May 3rd, 1846. He came to America with his parents in 1851, settling in Lemonster, Massachusetts, where the family resided till 1861, when they came west and settled in Highland township, Clayton County.
On June 1st, 1873, he was united in marriage here at Elkader to Mary Clipper; to this union twelve children were born. Four children preceded the father in death.
He is survived by his faithful wife and eight children as follows: Margaret and Mrs. Thos. Donlon of this place, Anna in Chicago, and Sister Martha at St. Vincent's Academy at Dubuque; Thomas, Phillip and Luke, residing near Elkader, and John at Tobique, Minnesota. He also leaves seven grandchildren and one brother, T. A. Boland of Dubuque.
Funeral services were held Saturday forenoon, June 27th, at St. Joseph's church, Very Rev. Father Taken officiating, with interment in St. Joseph's cemetery.
The pall bearers were: John Melary, Charles Meisner, Peter Lannon, Wm. Finley, John McGee and James Neylon.
