Elkader Register, Thur., 14 May 1925. Strawberry Point column.

Christian Sauerbry, youngest son of George and Barbara Sauerbry, was born March 6, 1847, near the city of Chicago. His parents moved ten years later to a farm near St. Sebald church where Christian grew to manhood. It was here that he was baptized and brought up in the Lutheran faith. In 1871 when 24 years of age he went to Golconda, Ill., where he two years later was united to Miss Louise Belford who survives him.

The following year the young couple came to Cass township and settled on the old homestead northeast of Strawberry Point. It was here they labored and were happy as a fine family of sons and daughters came to bless their home.

When Mr. and Mrs. Sauerbry came to Iowa, they did not come with the present day luxuries, but journeyed here behind three pairs of oxen. They also brought one horse, which was led behind the moving wagon. Later Mr. Sauerbry became very well known as he alone hauled grain to Dubuque, his wagon being drawn by eight yoke of oxen.

In 1907 Mr. and Mrs. Sauerbry moved to town where they have since lived and where they have enjoyed the fruits of their labors and their savings.

Twelve children came to bless their home, eleven of them are living: John died July 28, 1907, being struck by lightning while employed on a ranch in Wyoming. All were present at the funeral except Ethel who lives at Whitier, Cal. She received the telegram which was delayed to late to reach her when burial took place. Those living are James Sauerbry, Charles Sauerbry, Effie, now Mrs. Orrin Pugh, all of this place, Dr. Frank Sauerbry of Arlington, Geo. Sauerbry of Oelwein, Ed Sauerbry of Fergus Falls, Minn., Ralph Sauerbry of Elyria, Ohio, Bess, now Mrs. B. A. Smith of Fayette, Ruby, now Mrs. L. Allfree of Des Moines, Ethel, now Mrs. V. Bodeman of Whitier, Cal., and Buelah, now Mrs. A. Beauhn of Epworth, and ten grandchildren are left to mourn the loss of a kind grandpa. Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday afternoon conducted by Rev. Turnew, pastor of the M.E. church. Burial took place in our beautiful cemetery.

Another pioneer has passed to his reward. He came here several years before the Civil War and his labors were different from those of today. As a young man he followed the old fashioned reaper when binding was done by hand. No shoes covered his feet as he stumbled over the rough up-turned sod bustling with hazelroot stubs. But he had faith in his country, his neighbors, mankind and his bible and he leaves this old world with many things that those who mourn can point to with pride.
