Elkader Register, Thur., 12 Mar. 1925.
Undoubtedly a beloved husband is gone. And not only a husband has been called away from this land of sadness to the land of gladness but also a dear son of his mournful parents and affectionate brother should close his eyes lids in death so unexpectedly. This beloved husband son and brother is Mr. Carl J. Funk.
Our departed brother saw this world's light June 4th, 1884, in Read township, Clayton county, Iowa. He was confirmed in 1889. He married Sept. 4th, 1923, Mrs. Rose Kainz Hekel. Our departed brother always was a really loving husband, a beloved son of his sorrowing parents, a dear brother, an always kind neighbor and friend. He suddenly took sick February 24th with appendix trouble. Thursday of last week he had to undergo a painful operation. It was God's unexplorable council to take our deceased brother away from this valley of tears to the heavenly Garner March 2nd Monday noon at 1 o'clock in Clark's Hospital at McGregor, Iowa.
He should bring his earthly pilgrimage on merely 40 years 8 months and 26 days.
He leaves to mourn his deeply afflicted wife, a step-son Charles, his sorrowing parents Karl Funk and his mother Emily nee Greenley, finally his two mournful brothers and his five dear sisters, who shed hot tears before the coffin namely Ben Funk in Read twp., Mrs. Amelia Gordes in Read township, August Funk, in Boardman twp., Mrs. Lena Gossman, at Elkader, Mrs. Minnie Pierce at Dubuque, Iowa, Mrs. Freida Doeppke, Read twp., Mrs. Paulina Leib, Read twp. His brother William preceded him i death Nov. 27th, 1922.
Our departed brother found his last resting place in the new cemetery of our Zions Lutheran church at Clayton Center. Rev. Wm. Wuestenberg was officiating in the mourning house, at church and at the grave. May our departed one rest in peace. May he see the dawn of Eternity. Mourning friends, take to heart the blessed comfort.
There is no death, the stars go down
To rise upon some other shore,
And bright in Heaven's jewelled crown
They shine forevermore.
