John Bunting was born Nov. 1st, 1837, at Annah of Pomerania Germany, and passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Amelia Strong, in Fayette county, Iowa, on February 16th, 1925, at the age of 87 years, 3 months and 15 days.
He was united in marriage to Charlotte Heitman on Dec. 25th, 1860. To this union eleven children were born, of which four died in infancy.
In 1881 the family came to this country and settled in Read Township, Clayton County, Iowa. Later they moved on a farm northwest of Elkader where they remained for a number of years. When the infirmities of advanced years began to show their marks, then Mr. and Mrs. Bunting came to Elkader, and lived with their son Herman and family. About five years ago the old couple decided decided to make their home with their daughter, Mrs. Amelia Strong of Fayette county. There Mrs. Bunting passed away July 13th, 1922. This was a severe loss to the aged father and husband, but daughter and grandchildren left nothing undone to make his remaining years as comfortable as possible.
Mr. Bunting was a man with a remarkable, robust constitution, and enjoyed good health. About three weeks ago he suffered a slight paralytic stroke. Everything possible was done by loved ones to give comfort and relief. On Sunday last another stroke followed, and from that time on the patient began to fail fast and passed away the next day.
One son and two daughters mourn the death of a father, William, of Littleport, Iowa, Mrs. Amelia Strong and Mrs. Matilda Feller, of Fayette county. Eight children having preceded their father in death, four in infancy. Anna Bunting, a number of years ago, Mrs. Marie Coates on Dec. 25th, 1913, at the age of 44 years, Herman on July 11th, 1914, at the age of 35 years and Charles on Sept. 5th, 1916, at the age of 51 years.
Mr. Bunting was a member of the Evangelical Church of Elkader, and for some years janitor of that church, and in that capacity he was always found at his post of duty.
He also leaves 16 grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. John Uecker, of Elkader, and Mrs. Wilhelmine Pank of Alma, Wis., and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Feb. 18th, at eleven o'clock in the morning at the house in Fayette Co., and at two o'clock in the Evangelical church at Elkader. Interment was made in the East Side Cemetery.
