Elkader Register, Thur., 08 Jan. 1925.

The death of Joseph T. Leonard occurred at his home in Elkader Wednesday evening January 7th, 1925, of heart trouble. He had been in poor health for the past two years and had practically been confined to his bed for the last three months. Wednesday morning he seemed somewhat better but that evening the weakened heart stopped short. Monday as the result of an eruption on his body that could possibly have been small pox, the doctor in charge thought it advisable to quarantine the home.

Mr. Leonard was born in the city of New York on May 17, 1870, the son of John and Sarah Leonard, both natives of the Emerald Isle. The family came west in 1875 and settled o a farm in Clayton county, here Mr. Leonard assisted with the management of the farm until he was thirty-one years of age.

On February 6, 1901, he was united in marriage with Anna Wacker of Mederville, Iowa, two children came to bless their happy home, Florence and Clarence. Mr. Leonard purchased a farm of about 100 acres in this vicinity and conducted a creamery business in connection with it. His creamery business grew rapidly and he came to Elkader to operate a creamery and ice cream business and conducted the same until a few weeks ago when his health compelled him to retire from the active management.

He is survived by his faithful wife, two children, Florence and Clarence who assisted their father with the management of the creamery and ice cream business for some time. He also leaves two brothers, Charles of St. Paul and Fred of this place, two sisters Mrs. A. _. Albrecht of Mederville and Mrs. Lo__s M_der of T____, Oklahoma.

Owing to the quarantine there will be no public funeral. The sympathy of the community will however, be with the bereaved ones in their sorrow. Mr. Leonard was a man of good character, a man who made friends and kept them, a good and useful citizen taken when life should have had many more years in store for him.
