Elkader Register, Fri. morning, 19 Mar. 1897.

At this place, at 5 o'clock Thursday morning, March 18th, 1897, occurred the death of Flora May, wife of H. L. Griffith, junior editor of the Register, and only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank D. Lothrop, of Dubuque. Mrs. Griffith was born in Dubuque, March 3rd, 1875, where she had resided with the exception of two years, until she came to Elkader. She was a graduate of the Dubuque High School and had become an expert as a stenographer. On the 16th of June last she married Harry L. Griffith, whom she had known from her childhood.

They came to Elkader and prepared a home of their own and were eagerly planning for the work of life. About seven weeks ago Mrs. Griffith was taken seriously ill, but for the past two weeks seemed to be recovering, until Wednesday evening last when complications of the heart appeared and she gradually sank to the end.

Early in her young life she became a servant of the Master, and united with the Second Presbyterian church of Dubuque. Quiet and unassuming she had, with her wealth of affection, gathered to herself a large circle of friends, who in uniting their tears with ours, also wonder with us, why we are permitted to let our affections entwine themselves to a precious one only to have our hearts burdened with the grief of parting. God grant that these distressed hearts of her young husband and parents may in some manner, receive some consolation.

Mrs. Griffith will be taken to Dubuque today for burial, from the residence of D. G. Griffith where a short service will be held at promptly 2 p.m.

The Funeral of Mrs. H. L. Griffith at Dubuque.

The remains of Mrs. May Lothrop Griffith were taken from Elkader to Dubuque on Saturday last, and on Sunday afternoon the funeral took place from the residence of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lothrop, 51 Rose street. There were many beautiful floral offerings from Elkader and Dubuque, and a large number of the friends of the deceased were present. Rev. Elliot W. Brown, pastor of the Second Presbyterian church, who but a few short months previous had officiated at her wedding, conducted the services, and endeavored with comforting words and kind acts to assuage the grief of the bereaved. The Second street choir, consisting of Miss Ida Grant, Mrs. J. L. Taylor, Frank Barnard and J. V. Conzett, furnished the music. The interment was in Linwood.

The pall-bearers were John Everall, Jr., and A. J. Carpenter, of Elkader, Iowa; Eugene Ivey, of Lancaster, Wis.; John Corrance, Tudor Jones and D. R. Jones, Jr., of Dubuque.

Among the relatives present from abroad were Jason Lothrop, Lancaster, Wis.; Mrs. M. S. Durfey, Aurora, Iowa; Mrs. Ella Ivey and Mr. and Mrs. Byron Shepard, Manchester; D. G. Griffith, Elkader; H. R. Lathrop, of Dubuque, a graduate of the high school of her native city, and married the junior editor of the Elkader Register on the l6th of last June.
