Elkader Register, Fri. morning, 15 Oct 1897. Local Scrap Bag column. From the Dubuque Times, undated.
The Strawberry Point correspondent to the Dubuque Times gives the following account of a most distressing accident which occurred there last week. whereby the little three-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Everett lost its life. Mrs. Everett had been cleaning house and in so doing the floor became littered with papers. She stepped outside for a few moments, and while out heard the little one scream as if in great pain. She hastily ran into the house and was horrified to see her little one enveloped in flames which could not be extinguished until too late to save its life. It seems that after the mother stepped outside the little girl thought to assist her in the house cleaning and had opened the stove to put some papers in, and in so doing her clothing caught fire.
