Elkader Register, Fri. morning, 16 July 1897. Local Scrap Bag column.
Mrs. Joseph Whittle, after a lingering illness of cancer, died at her home on Cox Creek, on Friday, July 2nd. She was about 60 years of age, and was among the early settlers of the township. She was a woman highly respected by all. She bore her severe suffering patiently and awaited the end fearlessly. Four children survive her loss, Mrs. J. P. O'Leary, of Ossian. John, Calvin and Mrs. J. Meyer, of Cox Creek. The funeral services were held from St. Joseph church at Elkader on Sunday morning last, attended by many friends and neighbors. The interment was in St. Joseph's cemetery. May she rest in peace.
