Elkader Register, Fri. Morning, 09 July 1897.
Two boys, Henry Wolf and Louis Katschowsky, were walking along the banks of the Turkey River in Haven's pasture Sunday afternoon, when they came upon the body of a man lying in the grass. An alarm was given and others were attracted to the place when the remains were identified as those of Eugene B. Munger, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Munger, of this place. Deceased was last seen alive between 7 and 8 o'clock Friday evening, and it is supposed that being overcome by the heat he had lain down with his face to the ground and smothered. He was found with his hands folded before his face and his face to the ground.
Several physicians made an examination of the body and found no bruises on or about his person, and the conclusion arrived at was that he died a natural death probably from exposure.
The remains were in such condition that by order of Geo. Wolf, J.P., acting coroner, they were interred in the East Side cemetery, Rev. Mr. Wing officiating at the ceremony.
Justice Wolf summoned a coroner's jury composed of Geo. Cassutt, H. D. Brown and Frank Hadrich with Geo. H. Wolf as clerk and after viewing the body and hearing other testimony they rendered a verdict that Mr. Munger came to his death "by the visitation of God in a natural way, and not by means of any violence."
The deceased was 51 years, 10 mos. and 9 days of age, and leaves five children.
