Elkader Register, Fri. morning, 21 May 1897. Garnavillo column.

Last Friday, Norma Maurer, another one of our Garnavillo girls, was taken from our midst. She was a bright child of 12 years, and the only daughter of Mrs. J. D. Maurer. She was taken sick last Monday and continuely grew worse, and about 5 o'clock grim death reaped its harvest. Mrs. Maurer did all that was in her power to save her, but in vain. She leaves a mother, four brothers and a large circle of friends to mourn her loss. Funeral took place Monday, Rev. Sommerlad officiating. The entire community offers sincere sympathy to the Maurer family.
