Elkader Register, Fri. morning, 14 May 1897.
Sunday morning while driving a colt owned by W. A. Preston, Henry Cords, of this place, met with an accident that has caused his death. The colt was one that Mr. Cords, being in the employ of Mr. Preston, had frequently driven, even as far as Osborne. At the time of the unfortunate accident he was in a road cart driving along First street, when the horse took fright and commenced kicking and in some manner Mr. Cords was thrown out with his head dragging on the ground and one foot caught in the front of the cart. He was dragged some fifty yards before his body was loosened from the cart.
The unfortunate man was taken to his home and Drs. White and Miller were summoned. Tuesday evening the operation of trepanning was resorted to, but he was beyond medical skill and did not regain consciousness from the time of his injury. Mr. Cords died Thursday morning at 5:45. It was a sad accident.

Elkader Register, Fri. morning, 14 May 1897.
As the result of injuries received in a runaway accident Sunday last, Henry Cords passed away at 5:45 a.m. Thursday morning. He was born Dec. 17, 1832, in Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany. When about 13 years of age he came to the United States with his parents, they settling at Detroit, Mich. In 1844 the family came to Clayton county, locating at Guttenberg. Mr. Cords for several years worked among the farmers of Garnavillo twp. While working for Judge Murdock on June 6th, 1858, he united his fortunes with Miss Dora Borghart, Jas. L. Gilbert, J.P., performing the marriage ceremony at his old home in Read twp., now the residence of Fred Diers. After marriage Mr. and Mrs. Cords located on what is now the Casey farm in Cox Creek twp., and later bought the Jake Hysham farm near the corners. Here they resided until four years ago when they moved to Elkader.
Deceased was a hard working man, a pleasant neighbor, honest in his dealings with men, and a kind and affectionate husband. His sad death while active and planning for the comfort of his home, is a hard blow to his companion of thirty-nine years. Besides the bereaved wife, one brother Charles, of Cox Creek, and one sister, Mrs. Mary Nehls, of Dennison, Crawford county, Iowa, survive to mourn his untimely death.
The funeral will be held from the house Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the services to be conducted by Rev. F. W. Siefert. Our sympathy goes out to the bereaved.
