Last week we learned of the death of John W. Mason, who will be remembered by many of our citizens. His home where he died on the 6th of March, at Mausten, Minn., but for a number of years has spent portions of his time in McGregor.

The deceased was born in Richland county, Ohio, in 1820*. In 1861 he enlisted in the 16th Wisconsin Infantry and in 1864 reenlisted, serving until the close of the war.

At the battle of Atlanta after many days of hard fighting that occurred in the many battles preceding the final struggle for the possession of Atlanta, he was wounded, being shot through the hips. Later on he was taken prisoner and sent to Andersonville. There for nine long months he endured the horrors of starvation and disease.

During the time he lived in McGregor he was a familiar figure on our streets but there were few, who when they saw him, knew what a splendid service he had given to his country, a service that rendered him a continual sufferer for many years.

It would seem that the death of such a man, should not pass without special notice. While we are doing honor to our soldiers of the late war we ought not to forget how much honor is still due the men who like Mr. Mason, not for months but for years fought and endured privations that the men of 98 knew little about.

We know little about his relatives except that Mr. Mason is his brother and Frank Mason of McGregor his son, but we do know that he was an honest man, a good citizen, and at all times a courteous gentleman, who it was a pleasure to meet.

He was a member of Hervey Dix Post G.A.R. of this place, and will always be remembered by his comrades of the Grand Army of the Republic.
