Contributor: Connie Ellis (transcriber)Ruth Alphild Larson was born April 19, 1907 near Clermont, Iowa, the fifth child born to Hans Larson and Katinka (Larson) Larson. She passed away on Thursday morning May 5, 2005 at the Eagle Ridge care facility west of Clermont, Iowa. She had reached the age of 98 years and 16 days. Interment was in the East Clermont Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Clermont, Iowa near Gunder, Iowa in Clayton County.
Ruth was baptized in the East Clermont Lutheran Church on May 19, 1907 and confirmed August 21, 1921 at Preeceville, Saskatchewan, Canada. Ruth's parents immigrated to Iowa in 1903 with three children. They settled initially on the Stolle farm north of West Union, Iowa where the family worked the land for about 14 years. Ruth attended country school near her home. When she was about ten years old, the family moved to Saskatchewan, Canada. They lived in Canada for approximately eight years where she finished high school. The family returned to Fayette County in 1925 settling near Clermont. Ruth attended the WBU Business School at LaCrosse, Wisconsin and was employed at the Estey Law Office in West Union for five years.
On February 18, 1933 Ruth was married to Ewald Arthur Lyngaas in the Lutheran Parsonage at Clermont by the Reverend G. Gunsten. To this union two children were born, Janet and Ronald. The couple farmed in Clayton County, Iowa until 1972 when they moved into their new home in Clermont.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ewald, who died December 6, 1992; a daughter Janet Hovden, a son Ronald; two granddaughters Ruth Annette and Carol Ann Hovden; four brothers Leif Larson, Carsten Larson, Howard (Jean) Larson, and George (Susanna) Larson; and sister Esther (Aulden) Cornish.
She is survived by her three grandchildren: Leslie (Audrey) Hovden of Decorah, Iowa, Cathy (Scott) Decker of Byron, Minnesota, Lonnie Lyngaas of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; four great-grandchildren Mitchell Hovden, Daniel Hovden, Christa Decker, and Kyle Decker; a son-in-law Verne (Margurete) Hovden, and a daughter-in-law Phyllis (Robert) Bork of Postville, Iowa.
