Elkader Register, Thur., 22 Nov. 1900.

Stella Layton, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Layton, was born April 11th, 1894, and died Nov. 19th, 1900, aged 6 years, 7 months and 8 days. She was the third in a family of four children and the first death to occur in the home. Stella was never rugged, requiring more or less careful attention all her life, in fact her parents hardly dared hope her constitutional trouble might be so far overcome as to insure life to mature years.

She entered the city schools this last term and was bright and quick to learn and ambitious beyond her strength. When the days work was done at school she continued her work at home, leaving some unfinished work on the little blackboard just before her death. She was in school all week previous to her death; on Saturday she complained of not feeling well, Sabbath morning about 8 o'clock she was taken quite sick, the family physician was summoned and she found relief and seemed as well as usual during the day. At night she wanted to sleep in her own little bed and slept well until about two o'clock, when began the struggle between life and death. It lasted only a few minutes - the patient little sufferer gave up its home in this world.

Stella was a favorite in her neighborhood and on account of her general ill health the heart of the home was centered upon her. In life she was passionately fond of flowers, in death, she was buried in a bad of choicest blossoms.

The services were held in the Congregational church Tuesday at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. W. J. Stowers. The minister took for his text the words: "God is Love", a text of scripture the little girl had learned at Sabbath School and so often repeated at home. It was a sad service and Mr. and Mrs. Layton have the sympathy of the entire city.
