Elkader Register, Thur., 04 Oct. 1900. Volga column.
Mary Ellen Peck, eldest daughter of George S. and N. E. Peck, was born at Osbourne Jan. 10th, 1852, and departed for her heavenly home Sept. 30th, 1900. She married Wm. John Hawthorne Dec. 2d, 1871. The first two years of their married life were spent at Fort Dodge, Iowa, two and one-half years at Chicago and the remainder here in our midst. To this union was born six children, two of which, Addie and George, have preceded their mother to the home above. She became a member of the Methodist church during Mr. KcKee's pastorate, and has been a consistent, helpful member ever since. Her final illness was of nineteen months duration, during which time she was a constant but patient sufferer.
Oh ! It is difficult to understand why one so lovely in character and so greatly needed here for the good of her family and society should be taken away, yet we know, "He doeth all things well."
The funeral was held in the M.E. church Tuesday and was largely attended by a number of sympathizing friends.
