Arlington Man Loses Life in Smash-Up
Elmer Homan, a retired farmer living in Arlington, was killed instantly when he was thrown from the car on the left under the wheels of the car on the right. The accident happened last Sunday at Maryville Corner.Elmer Homan of Arlington became Fayette County's fifth auto fatality of 1968 when he was injured fatally in a grinding two-car crash at the junction of highways 154 and 3 at Maryville corner about noon last Sunday.
Mr. Homan, 72, was a passenger in a car driven by Ray Wilcox 81, also of Arlington. They were travelling east on Highway 3 and were turning north onto Highway 154. Duane Hummell, 29, of Strawberry Point and his family were traveling east on Highway 3 and the two cars met almost head on right in the center of the intersection. lack of skid marks indicated that neither driver had time to apply his brakes. Officers are still investigating to find the exact cause of the accident.
Mr. Wilcox remains in the Oelwein mercy Hospital with severe head injuries. Hummel and his son Ronald, 3, were treated and released on Sunday, but Mrs. Eleanor Hummel, 32, and a second son, Roger, 8, are still recovering from multiple cuts. They are reported in good condition.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 9, at the Gleim Funeral Home in Arlington for Mr. Homan, with burial at the Taylorsville Cemetery. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Hulbert of Arlington, and Mrs. Alvin Mitchell of Manchester.
Mr. Homan was a retired farmer, and was a familiar character along the streets of Arlington. He enjoyed sitting in the sun and watching the activity of the town. Shy by nature, he wasn't one to make very many close friends but he always had a smile of gesture of salutation as the townsfolk passed by.
