Elkader Register, Thur. 05 July 1900. Local News columns.
At the residence of A. Kramer, early Sunday morning, July 1st, occurred the death of Fred Roth after a short illness of congestion of the lungs and complications. Deceased was a young man about 20 years old, who about the 15th of May came to this country from Switzerland. He came direct to Elgin and thence to Elkader and entered the employ of A. F. & L. J. Kramer on May 21st. During his short engagement with this firm he had endeared himself to them and the Kramer family, and in his sickness he was given every care that could possibly be given, but it was unavailing. It is a sad case of a stranger in a strange land with not a relative to be with him in his last hours. It was probably this thought that caused such a large attendance at his funeral Sunday afternoon. The service was conducted by Rev. G. F. Braun of the Lutheran church. The Gesang Verein also attended and added to the impressiveness of the sad service. The interment was in the East Side cemetery.
