The five year old son* of Mr. and Mrs. Apple, pastor of the German Lutheran church, died last Sunday and last Tuesday the funeral was held in the M.E. church where over three hundred friends gathered to pay their respects to the mourning relatives. There were six German ministers, including Rev. Apple, present. The service was divided a part being in the English language.

Added by S. Ferrall, 8/7/2020: The Elkader Register mistakenly reported this death as a son, but the child was Regina Appel ......
Little Regina was the only daughter of Rev. J. Appel and his wife Sophia nee Bredow. She was born Sept. 21st, 1894 near this place and baptised 5 days afterwards.
Being of a kind and propsessing disposition she was not only dearly loved by her parents but was also the favorite of most everyone with whom she came in contact. Though far from being faultless - she may without hesitancy be called a good child, as children my be good and her faculties developed early and nicely.
But the Lord would not let her remain long on earth. Last winter inflammation of the eyeballs set in which caused her a great deal of inconvenience as she could not bear the light. This developed into catarrh of the stomach, typhoid-malaria was added which soon reduced this fleshy child to almost a skeleton.
It was three weeks Sunday when she laid down on her sick bed to rise no more but once a few days afterwards. She bore her burden very patiently and complained but little. Though medical skill was freely employed it was soon evident that she was fast failing and passing away.
The last two days she remained unconscious and last Sunday at 2:50 p.m. her soul was carried to the kingdom on high. We do not mourn for her sake, for she is well cared for at the throne of our savior king, but we lament the loss the hard stricken parents have sustained and pray to the Lord for consolation and strength for them.
Her age was 5 years 8 mo. and 19 days.
The large M.E. Church was packed with friends at the funeral which was conducted by Rev. Groening of Monona, Rev. Blessin of New Hampton, and Rev. Finch. With the mourners we noticed Mrs. Appel's Father and Brother, both ministers in the German Lutheran Church. A part of the sermon, as well as a share of the singing was in English, much to the satisfaction of a large part of the congregation.
The little casket was literally covered with beautiful flowers brought by loving friends. The teacher dismissed the schools and brought their children to take part in the exercises, as they marched past they each placed a bouquet on the casket.
