Col. Douglass Leffingwell died in New Haven, Conn., last week at the age of 74. He was a native of Ohio, coming to McGregor when a young man. He was at one time mayor of the city, and organized a company to serve in the Civil War. He later represented this county in the legislature. He left here for the east in the 80's and has since lived in New Haven. He leaves two sons, Louis and Douglas, both of Fargo, N.D.

Another Veteran Gone - Colonel [Capt.] Douglas Leffingwell Who Served With the Ohio Boys
New Haven, Conn., April 5 - Colonel [Capt] Douglass Leffingwell is dead at his home in this city, aged 74 years.
He was born in Ellsworth, Ohio. In 1852 he went to Cleveland to practice law.
He organized the first company that went to the front in 1861, from Clayton county [Iowa]. At the battle of Shiloh he was severely wounded.
He was subsequently elected mayor of the city of McGregor, Ohio [sic - McGregor, Iowa], and represented his district in the state legislature.
He was at one time prominent in New York city, and was the Republican candidate against Tweed's man Connelly for county clerk.
