Louis Opitz was born July 15th, 1843, in Klein-Ebersdorf, Province of Saxony, Altenburg, Germany. He came to America with his brother Fred and in 1868 they came to Elkader, Iowa, where for several years they worked together. Later they purchased a farm four miles north of town, consisting of 290 acres, which they worked in partnership with great success. During Mr. Opitz's residence in Elkader he helped to organize the Gesang Verein and was for years a faithful member, even after moving on the farm his interest did not cease. Mr. Opitz never married but lived with his brother Fred and his family until death relieved him of his sufferings, which occurred Tuesday morning, Jan. 30, 1900, at the age of 56 years, 6 months and 15 days. The deceased served for ten years as school director in district No. 7, and as trustee of Boardman twp., six years, which offices he filled to the entire satisfaction of our citizens. Those left to mourn his loss are his brother Fred and family, also sisters in Germany. May his memory never be forgotten and his ashes rest in peace.

The funeral services were held at the Congregational church this afternoon Rev. F. W. Seifert officiating.
