Elkader Register, Thur., 12 Oct. 1922. Strawberry Point column.

Mrs. Otterbeck, nee Susanna Barbara Schilling, was born in Germany Jan. 24, 1862, and died Oct. 5, 1922, at her home near Strawberry Point at the age of 60 years, 8 months and 10 days. When seven years old with her parents she moved to Goldbach, Germany, where she spent a good portion of her life. In that place she received her religious training and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith. May 4, 1883, she was united in marriage to John Otterbeck. Nine children, six sons and three daughters of which the oldest daughter preceded her in death about three years ago. In 1892 she came to America with her four children to join her husband who came here four months earlier. They lived in Fayette County, Iowa, near Strawberry Point another fifteen years. About nine years ago a paralytic stroke brought her to the verge of death and she never fully recovered from the effects of this ailment. All these sad afflictions she endured like a Christian. Suffering more or less about two weeks ago she became seriously ill and it became evident that an operation was necessary. Her age and the advanced condition of her ailment (appendicitis) made hopes doubtful.

"Beloved, it is well
Gods ways are always right
And perfect love is O'er them all
Though far above our sight."

Besides her husband she leaves six sons and two daughters: Chas., Chris, Fred and Will of this place and Louie and Herman of Dundee, Mrs. H. Skibee of this place and Mrs. A. Possehl of Dundee, also 19 grandchildren and one sister and one aunt. Funeral services occurred Saturday afternoon conducted by Rev. Rembold of Arlington in English and German. Her six sons acted as pallbearers and bore their beloved mother to her last resting place in our beautiful cemetery.

"Judge not the Lord by feeble sense
But trust Him for His grace
Behind a proving Providence
He leads a smiling face."
