The obituary is taken from the columns of the Monona Leader of last week:
Alvin Edgar Waugh was born in Monona. Iowa, April 17th, 1858, and died Dec. 11th, 1900. His age was therefore 42 years, 7 months and 21 days. Here he was raised to young man hood and educated in our common schools, his home with his grandparents, to whom he was the mainstay. In boyhood his mother’s dependent, always bearing in mind the comforts and welfare of the aged people with whom his lot was cast. He was industrious and saving, and by his own exertions, a hard worker, thrifty and enterprising, he acquired a neat little properly interest, admirably providing for those he leaves to mourn his taking off in the very prime of manhood.
He learned the art of telegraphy in the Monona station, and his first assignment to station agent service for the Milwaukee company was at Castalia a position he held for about thirteen years, to his credit and honor, and to the advantage of the company. He was transferred to Monona in 1893, succeeding J. W. Shelby. He was faithful to the charge committed to his care, and by the company and all who were acquainted with his service he was recognized as a man of marked ability, a faithful, diligent and painstaking employe. His well known integrity of character, his strict business methods, and the earnestness with winch he entered into the work assigned to him won the respect and confidence of the community and endeared him to all with whom he came in contact.
In 1881 Mr. Waugh led to the altar Miss Sarah L. Maley, of Castalia. To this union three children were born, one dying in infancy. Two, Lula and Althea, survive the father and with the wife and mother mourn the loss of him who to them was all, an indulgent and honored parent, a loving and devoted companion. The mother of the deceased, Mrs. Bush, of Castalia, and her husband, are present at the bier of this faithful son, sincerely mourning the severing of the last link in the family tie,
in Monona, among the people with whom he has been a busy body the past, seven years, his death brings sorrow and sincere regret. In the social and business circles his presence will be missed: with all he was a favorite.
Mr. Waugh was a member of the Ossian Masonic Lodge, A. F. & A. M., which body with the assistance of the Monona Lodge and visiting brethren took charge of the funeral services Friday at 2 p. m., at the M. E. Church, Rev. P. M. Dwello, the former pastor of this church, and the present pastor, Rev. McCord, conducting the services.
