Mrs. Mary Hammond, one of our old pioneer residents, passed away at her home here on Thursday Aug. 17, at 1 p.m. after a lingering illness of two years, at the advanced age of 86 years. She was born in Bedford Co. Penn., and came to Iowa at an early age and has spent all her life in this vicinity.
She leaves to mourn her death four surviving children, John Hammond of Chester, Iowa, Mrs. Squire Hansel, Mrs. Minnie Chall and Bert Hammond of Garber, besides a host of relatives and friends. She was laid to rest Saturday p.m. beside her husband, Geo. Hammond who preceded her in death six years ago, in Brown cemetery, near Colesburg. Rev. Riggs of Fairview conducted the services both at the home and the Fairview church. The funeral was very largely attended showing the esteem in which she was held by the entire community.
