--- ---

John Pebler was born in Detroit, Michigan, on June 6, 1858. His parents were Frederick Philipp Pebler and Barbara nee Recknagel. He was the third of a family of five children. He was brought to the Lord in Holy Baptism at a tender age.

Soon after his birth the family moved from Michigan to a farm in Cass township in the vicinity of Strawberry Point. Several years later they moved to a farm in Sperry township.

As members of the Lutheran Church at St. Sebald the children were instructed in the fundamentals of Christian faith and life and were confirmed. John Pebler was confirmed by Pastor List, who was pastor at St. Sebald at that time.

For a number of years following his confirmation Mr. Pebler assisted his parents on the home farm. When his father passed away Mr. Pebler left the parental home and found employment in the neighborhood of Madison, South Dakota. He remained there for a period of four years and then returned to the vicinity of St. Sebald and worked on the home farm until the death of his mother.

Following the decease of his mother, Mr. Pebler and his sister, Marie, moved to a home one mile south-east of Strawberry Point and as advancing years forced him to retire from the activities demanded by work on the farm, he and his sister moved to Strawberry Point. For 20 years they lived here helping one another and remaining active in the work of the church although physical activity had to be curtailed.

In the fall of 1938 on Sept. 11 his sister, Marie Pebler, passed away to the eternal rest. He was very much forelorn upon the passing of his beloved sister and companion. After attempting to get along with the help of a housekeeper, the deceased entered the convalescent home in connection with the Allen Lutheran Memorial Hospital, Waterloo, Iowa. Here he conceived the plan of giving his home for the purpose of establishing a Lutheran Home for the Aged. This he did with the stipulation he be given life-long care. For the past four years through this generosity a large number of aged have found a Christian Home where to spend the evening years of their life.

Mr. Pebler was deeply interested in the Church, his parents being co-laborers with the Fritschel brothers in the early days of the former Iowa Synod and the building of the St. Sebald congregation. He was particularly interested in the cause of missions and gave liberally to the end that the Gospel of Christ might be proclaimed in this country and in New Guinea.

He was a member of the Emanuel Congregation and gratefully received the spiritual ministrations of the Church, partaking of Holy Communion the forepart of January.

For the past six months his health failed him. Since last Sunday he was bedfast. In view of his condition and also that he needed medical attention which he could not receive here it was considered advisable that he be taken to the hospital at Oelwein. Here he passed away Friday, Feb. 2. He attained the high age of 86 years, 7 months, 26 days.

Those of the immediate family surviving are his nieces and nephews: John Strassburger, Milwaukee, Wis.; Mrs. Otto Fuehr, Strawberry Point; Mrs. Jake Wittorf, Arlington; Clarence Nus, Arlington; Edwin Pebler, Freeport, Ill.; Mrs. Archie Weimar, Minneapolis, Minn.; Fred Nus, Waterloo, Iowa.

The members of the Holmes family have given a Memorial in his memory for New Guinea Missions. The congregation also is giving a memorial of $25 in his memory for the same cause.

May he rest in peace and eternal light shine unto him eternally. Amen. -- Contributed.
