Earlville, March 15 - Death of Another Iowa Veteran
Capt. William Grannis, of the Grannis House, died quite suddenly of heart disease yesterday. He was Captain of Company D, Twenty-first Iowa Regiment. He was for sixteen years traveling agent for Wemott, Howard & Co. of Dubuque, and was a very successful salesman, and was greatly respected by all who knew him.~Dubuque Daily Times, March 17, 1886, pg 1.

Wm. Grannis, an old time resident of this place, died at his home in Earlville, Iowa, on Sunday last, and was buried on Monday.
His death was caused by heart disease, from which he has been suffering for some time.

Mr. Wm. Grannis died at his home in Earlville, Sunday morning, of paralysis of the heart.
The funeral took place the following day.
Mr. Grannis was one of the early settlers of Strawberry Point, and for many years made this his home. Of late years he has become well known as a commercial traveler, throughout this corner of the state. - Press-Democrat

Notes: Earlville is in Delaware co. IA. He is buried in Fairview cemetery, Delaware co. IA where his gravestone reads:

Dec. 16, 1821 - Mar. 14, 1886His 1st wife (Eliza P. Grannis), his son Myron M. and daughters Emma J. and Rhoda T. (Grannis) Decker are buried in the Visalia cemetery, Tulare co. CA.
His 2nd wife Laura (Palmer) Knapp Grannis died in August 1878 and is also buried in the Fairview cemetery.
He is in Earlville with his 3rd wife [Martha] Amelia Grannis on the 1880 U.S. census living in a hotel. His occupation is 'traveling man'.
