On the 14th day of June 1861 at Cincinnati, Ohio, was born Henry Luehsen, and he passed on to his heavenly home in his home at Garnavillo on the 29th of May at 12:15 a.m. at the age of 60 years, 11 months and 14 days. Although his death was not unexpected it cast a gloom over the entire community. To the people of Clayton County it is not necessary to eulogize Mr. Henry Luehsen, he was gifted with an optimistic nature and a positive character. He loved all that was good and beautiful in the world and was a great friend of little children. His health began to fail after the death of his only grandchild, Gertrude. Although a plain man in his home life with its comfort and surroundings he was ideal ever thoughtful of those about him, and his patients and uncomplaining spirit during his years of illness were an inspiration for all who knew him. He was a generous giver to all the churches and a member of the Modern Woodmen and charter member of the Turner Verien. He was a son of Henry and Margareta (Luers) Luehsen, he was a resident of Garnavillo since he was three years old. He has been in business for thirty-eight years in the Furniture & Undertaking business of Garnavillo and was essentially one of the honored and representative citizens of this place. Mr. Luehsen has been influential in public affairs. He was postmaster of Garnavillo for 17 years and for many years was Sec. of the Clayton County Fair Association. On the 14th Feb. 1884 was solemized the marriage of Miss Marie Ihde and Hy. Luehsen, to this union was born one son, Marvin H. on May 25th 1886, who preceded his father in death on Jan 27, 1915. He is mourned by his wife and daughter, Mrs. Georgina Schulte Luehsen Weber, and a large community of friends. The funeral services were held at the house and at St. Paul's church conducted by Rev. Wm. Braun on Thursday afternoon. The esteem in which he was held was shown by the large number in attendance, several hundred being unable to gain admission. Interment in the City Cemetery. The out of town relatives in attendance were Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Nobbman of Pleasant Dale, Neb., and Mrs. Busboom of Grand Island, Neb., and Mrs. Minnie Saxon and daughter of Earlville, Iowa, and August Ihde of Cook, Neb.
