Elkader Register, Thur., 27 Apr. 1922.
On Saturday afternoon the wires brought the sad message that J. C. Stemmer was to leave Glendive, Mont., on Sunday to bring the remains of his son Harry to Elkader, making the many friends here wonder what form of tragedy had caused the untimely death of the young man.
The facts as ascertained later are that Harry Stemmer went to a field on his farm near Intake, Mont., Saturday morning to seed it for grain, taking a rifle with him; presumably with the idea that he might see some game. Later in the morning a neighbor who was seeding in an adjoining field noticed Mr. Stemmer's team and a seeder without a driver and going over to investigate discovered him lying on the ground with a bullet hole through his body.
Just exactly how the tragedy occurred will probably never be known. Harry might have reached for the gun to shoot some game and it was accidently discharged or it may have slipped from the seeder with the same result. Harry's father, J. C. Stemmer, and the hired man were working in another field some distance away and knew nothing of the accident until called by the neighbor.
Harry Adolph Stemmer was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Stemmer and was born October 30th, 1891, here at Elkader, and his death occurred at his home near Intake, Mont., aged thirty years, six months and eight days.
Harry graduated from the Elkader schools with the class of 1910, and the same year he went to Montana to take charge of his father's farm.
He was united in marriage to Miss Ada D. Talley of this place on December 10th, 1914, and resided on the farm near Intake, Mont., ever since.
He leaves to mourn his death, his wife Mrs. Ada D. Stemmer, his father, Mr. J. C. Stemmer, and three sisters, Mrs. Ida Ruegnitz of Dubuque, Mrs. Anna Hallet of Sterling, Ill., and Mrs. Lina Reimer of Elkader. His mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Stemmer, preceded him in death October 9th, 1909.
The funeral was held from the home of his sister, Mrs. Wm. C. Reimer, at 1:30 on Tuesday afternoon, and at the Congregational church at 2:00 o'clock, Rev. C. H. Franke of the Evangelical church officiating. Interment in the East Side cemetery.
The following relatives from out of town were in attendance at the funeral: Mrs. B. A. Ruegnitz of Dubuque; Mrs. E. M. Hallet of Sterling, Ill.; Mrs. Henry Arnsten, Nekoma, Ill.; Charles E. Stemmer, Chicago; Atwell Talley, Sioux City, Iowa; Ray D. Talley, Oelwein, Iowa; Mrs. August Ruegnitz of Dubuque; and Mrs. E. O. Gunderson of Creston.
We extend our sympathy to the grief stricken family.
