Mrs. Mary Willmes, one of the early pioneers of Clayton County, died at the home of her children, in Boardman township, February 1st, 1922, after an illness of about eight weeks, pneumonia finally setting in, which was the cause of her death. Her maiden name was Mary Miller and was born April 11th, 1842, in Krondorf, Luxemberg, emigrating to America in 1863, coming direct to Clayton County. On April 30th, 1866, she was united in marriage with John Willmes, and to this union five children were born. She is survived by one brother, Peter Miller of Boardman township, also, four children, P. J. Willmes, of Panama, Iowa, Kathrina, D. F. and Simon at home. Her husband preceding her in death on October 29th, 1884.
The funeral occurred Saturday, February 4th and was very largely attended. Father Taken officiating. The following relatives from a distance were in attendance at the funeral:
P. J. Willmes of Panama, Iowa; Peter Miller of Defiance, Iowa; Phil Heles, Chas. Lei, Peter Lei, and Anna Hess of Dubuque; John and Leo Griner and Mrs. Clem Stefen of Luxemburg, Iowa.
