Clayton County Register, Thur., 21 Dec. 1933. Pg. 1 & 4.

J. A. Hanson, 59, was buried in the St. Joseph's cemetery here Monday morning, after services had been held in the St. Joseph's church, the Rev. Father J. P. Taken officiating.

Hanson is the man who was found in a serious condition in the town lock-up in Strawberry Point last Wednesday morning, where he had apparently been beaten up in a fight and, as officers believe, robbed.

Hanson claimed Keokuk as his home when he remained one night in the county jail here before going to Strawberry Point. Papers found on him established his identity as Hanson and also brought out the information that he had been a guard at the State Penitentiary in Fort Madison at one time. Other transients who knew him have told officers that he was in the habit of carrying quite a sum of money with him and this has given rise to the belief that he had been robbed.

The room at the city hall in Strawberry Point has been provided so that it can be used by transients to prepare meals and furnishes a place for them to sleep. It is thought that two others were with Hanson for when he was first discovered sandwiches and other food had been prepared for three people.

Hanson was discovered in his serious condition by still another transient, who in turn reported the matter to the marshall in Strawberry Point. Hanson was brought to the poor-farm near St. Olaf Wednesday evening, after he had been given first aid at Strawberry Point but he died as the result of his injuries Sunday morning at 6:45.

Officers are of the belief that three men were in the room during the night and that they had prepared their breakfast but before the food had been eaten the tussle for Hanson's money ensued. The other two men, if there were two, left hurriedly without waiting to eat their food.
