Adolph John Alt was a son of Herman and Katie Haan Alt, and was born at Clayton, June 29, 1892. He spent his entire life in this county, except for a few years when he lived in Minnesota, and another period during which he served his country in France. He was married to Miss Helene Blume, Clayton, Dec. 9, 1925. One son was born to them.
Mr. Alt became enlisted in the U.S. Army Sept. 18, 1917, at Camp Dodge. He served in Co. D, 4th Ammunition Train, and fought in the following engagements: Aisne Marne, Vesle, St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne. He received his discharge Aug. 7, 1919. Upon his release he entered the carpenter trade, working with Fred A. Fehlhafer for several years. He farmed at LeRoy, Minn., for two years. Again he resumed work as a carpenter at Garnavillo, until he was forced by necessity to cease active labor.
About a year ago he entered the Ed. Hines Veterans' hospital at Hines, Ill. A tumor of the brain developed. An operation was performed, however, the growth continued. On Monday morning he passed away at the age of 41 years, four months and 15 days, leaving his wife and son, four brothers and four sisters: Albert of Clayton; Arnold of Chicago; Theodore of Mt. Lake, Minn.; Herman of Delmar; Mrs. Linda Fehlhafer of Garber; Mrs. Ida Hagensick of Marquette; Mrs. Anna Green of Dubuque; and Mrs. Katie Sadwell of Wall, S.D.
Funeral services were held at St. Paul's church and conducted by the Rev. M. J. Harder, pastor, on Thursday afternoon. Military rites were accorded him by Lemka-Stendel Post No. 106, of Elkader, of which he was a member.
