Clayton County Register, Thur., 26 Oct. 1933.

Mrs. Ida Greve Steen, wife of Jacob W. Steen, Sr., died at her home on the farm in Boardman township, four miles south of Elkader, Thursday, Oct. 19th, 1933, having reached the age of 72 years, seven months and 23 days.

She was one of eleven children of Mr. ad Mrs. Wm. Greve, pioneer residents of Cox Creek township, Where she was reared and educated.

Her parents, one sister, Mrs. Bertha Mierson, three brothers, Otto Frank and Fred, preceded her in death. Surviving are four sisters and two brothers: Mrs. Frederiecka Harms, Oxford Junction, Iowa; Mrs. Elizabeth Enderes, Littleport; Mrs. Minnie Nelson and Mrs. Clara Hamilton, Aurora, Ill.; George Greve, of Greve, Mont., and Wm. Greve of Fairbury, Nebr.

She was united in marriage with Jacob W. Steen, July 1, 1885, in Elkader, and went the following day to her new home on the farm, where she has spent the past 48 happy years of her life with her devoted husband and children.

Five children were born to this union: Mrs. Mary Hughes, Littleport; William Steen, Elkport; Fred W. Steen, Elkader; Jacob Steen, Jr., on the old home farm near Elkader; Mrs. Clara Henning, Elkader; 15 grandchildren and her aged husband remain to mourn her departure.

Mrs. Steen was a quiet, home-loving mother of exceptional ability. Her entire life was wrapped up in her husband and children. She aimed to make all their friends welcome to her home and hospitality. Her neighbors will ever remember her kindly assistance in times of adversity.

"Grandma," as she was affectionately called by her friends, was endowed with such a pleasant, happy disposition that her presence will be sadly missed.

Her family may well be proud of the exemplary life she led. A rich legacy of a noble mother.

(Note: There followed a lengthy Longfellow quotation.)

Funeral services were held at the home Sunday at 2 o'clock p.m. Interment was made in the Communia cemetery, of which society she was a charter member. Rev. Paul Kitterer officiated.
